« ALL BLUES » ON HARMONICA
Singer-songwriter-musician, Jay Sewall was born in Boston and grew up in Montreal. Sock hops, coffee houses and bars were his musical schooling... including time in the Chicago blues scene during the 70's. (He played harmonica with Son Seals, Muddy Waters Jr, Ko Ko Taylor and Lefty Dizz). Since 1985, Mr Sewall has been living in Quebec City where he is a pillar in the blues community conducting jam sessions, teaching, producing and performing.
On stage Jay Sewall arrives with his colorful hats, New Orleans beads and many musical instruments. His musical repertoire consists of more than 1 000 songs including gospel, folk, blues, boogie-woogie, zydeco, funk and his own compositions.
Fresh from receiving the Lys Blues Lifetime Achievement Award last fall, Jay started off 2009 with a bang by going to
Toronto to record a new album with two old buddies, Ken Whiteley and Al Cross. The intention was to record an instrumental
harmonica album. The music and mixing were completed in just 8 days and the result presents Jay at his very best on both
diatonic and chromatic harmonicas.
The tunes vary from seven new compositions from Jay, to a jug band version of The Saints Go Marching In, to a very beautiful
version of Miles Davis' All Blues.
The production side was done by Juno Award winner and multi-instrumentalist, Ken Whiteley, who is also known for his work
with John Hammond Jr, Blind John Davis, Raffi, and many others. Just a few months ago Ken won the Estelle Klein Lifetime
Achievement Award.
This is definitely an exciting new musical partnership: two American born bluesmen who have become distinguished Canadian
citizens, one living in Quebec City and the other in Toronto. The music world will certainly benefit from the marriage of
these two soul brothers-and we will surely see a live tour of them together in the near future.
